Hitting the slopes

It is that time of year when many people organize a trip to hit the slopes and get in the cool mountain air. A few students at Lethbridge College are building the excitement and hoping to find new people to share the hill with.

The Lethbridge College Students’ Association (LCSA) Snowboard and Ski club is in its first year of organizing trips for students and members to get away for a weekend.

One thing that isn’t helping enthusiasm are the conditions in Southern Alberta.

“The warm weather in Lethbridge definitely kind of almost bums people out. They want to get out into the mountains and go skiing, but the warm weather here in town doesn’t get people excited,” said Mark Seleski, vice president of the club.

Despite the warmer weather the conditions in the city there has been snowfall up on the mountains. According to skibig3.com Lake Louise and Sunshine Village have received over 10 cm of snow in the past week.

The snowboard and ski club has gained some interest already with over 30 members and are still recruiting more people.

“We just want to share rides to the mountain by people who are equally passionate of going up to the mountains,” said member Marianne Leeson who has been skiing and snowboarding her whole life.

The main objective for the club is having a trip that will get members excited about hitting the mountains. Being that it is their first year, they don’t want to get carried away.

“We didn’t really want to get in too much over our heads, like planning too many trips. We’re trying to keep it simple,” said Seleski

January is when they are hoping to gain enough interest to plan a trip when everyone is back from the holidays.

“I’ve heard really good things about Castle [Mountain Resort] so we’re really looking forward to hopefully getting a trip out to Castle this year,” said Leeson

Club growth will make it easier for more trips to be organized throughout the year and if you are interested in joining them, you can visit the LCSA or check out their Facebook page.
