Kodiaks take on Douglas Royals

Emma Lowry passes the ball across the key on March 16.

Moving one step closer to a banner is huge.

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s basketball team did just that yesterday afternoon.

Taking on the Douglas College Royals of New Westminister, British Columbia, the girls dominated the court and took home the win in the first match up of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.

Todd Caughlin is the Athletic Director for Lethbridge College, who traveled to Edmonton to watch the girls compete at NAIT.

“That (first game) is sometimes the toughest to prepare for,” said Caughlin.

Stand out players for the Kodiaks were Logan Moncks, Emma Lowry, Sunder West and Shayna Mathison.

West lead the team with 26 points, Moncks and Mathison trailed behind at 15, and Lowry scored 11.

Lowry also lead the team with rebounds at 14, Mathison rebounded ten.

Even though the Kodiaks won, they are looking ahead to today’s game against the Nomades de Montmorency.

“We’re going to refocus, we’re going to do our homework on the teams we’re playing,” said Ali Cameron, the assistant coach for the Kodiaks.

The Kodiaks will be taking on the second ranked team in the country tonight at 6 p.m.

Key players from Montmorency’s first game yesterday included Mael Gilles, Maurane Corbin and Frederique Beauchamp.

Beauchamp dominated the boards with 18 points, while Gilles wasn’t far behind with 15.

Corbin was a rebounding machine with 14 by the end of the game.

Montmorency defeated the MSVU Mystics 75-58.
