One person died and several others were injured in a collision that took place in Lethbridge this morning.

The accused fled the scene but was located shortly after and has since been charged.

The accident happened in the Trades Mall parking lot around 9:00 a.m. this morning.

Two vehicles and a motorcycle were involved in the crash.

A passenger in one of the vehicles that was hit, Cara Kulak said what started off as a day of shopping with her friends quickly turned into a tragedy.

“I just heard the smash and that’s when I turned my head and saw they were hitting us, we were waiting for a parking spot we were looking at the motorcycle to move.”

Police say the suspect then fled the scene and has since been identified as 42-year-old James Roger Willis.

Police say the suspect driver of the gold SUV has been located at a local hotel. They say he was here visiting from out of the country.

“He’s a relator from Sacramento, California staying at the Tellalodge Hotel in Lethbridge,” said Constable Olivia Ferrier

Police also say alcohol was a factor and charges have been laid.

“He’s being charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily injury, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, other charges may also be laid.”

Willis will be held in police custody and appear in Lethbridge Provincial Court on Monday April 4th at 10 a.m.

The name of the deceased will not be released pending the notification of next of kin. Police also haven’t released an update on the status of others injured in the crash.
