Along with the Alberta College’s Athletic Conference Basketball championships being held, so were the Indoor Track Championships.

The Running Room 2017 ACAC Indoor Track Championships took place on Friday and Saturday  at the UofL’s 1st Choice Savings Centre.

This was the first time that Lethbridge has hosted the Indoor Track Championships.

The men’s team had come into the championship weekend with two first place finishes in the 4×400 metre relay in the first to meets of the season.

The relay team narrowly missed out of first place in their last race leading into the championships by four points.

Carlos Mena, captain for the Indoor Track team, believes that the team had a solid weekend, and that it can continue into next year.

“It just comes down to the work we put in through the off-season. Our coaches they’re really on top of us and how we train through the summer,” said Mena.

The women’s team went in to the weekend in fourth place, while having not earned an individual medal in the regular season.

Athletes backing athletes was a key part of the championship weekend here at the college and university.

Laura Serafini is a third-year volleyball player who went to support the indoor track team.

“Whenever there was a Kodiak player running, the rest of the team was very supportive in cheering them on and pushing them to do their best,” said Serafini.

The men’s team claimed a gold in the men’s 4×400 relay and Serafini believes that each runner did well in achieving their goals.

“All the racers did well even if they didn’t medal. many even got new personal bests, so that in itself is pretty impressive and they should be proud of how it turned out,” said Serafini.

The Kodiaks collected five medals at the championships, and also took home third place in both the men’s and women’s overall team standings.
