An apple a day keeps the doctor away but probably only if you throw it at him. Here are a few more rules, tips and tricks to keep your body and mind healthy.
10. Stay away from trans-fats. You hear that they are bad but how bad are they really? Unlike regular saturated fats, there is no maximum value to consume because doctors recommend they should not be consumed at all.
9. Sleep regularly. A normal amount of sleep can be the difference between a really good day and a really bad day. Feeling refreshed is a big part of feeling and being healthy!
8. Express your emotions. Keeping everything inside is an unhealthy habit that many people do unknowingly. Here’s a quick science lesson: volcanoes erupt and so will you if you don’t find a healthy way to deal with the slowly building pressure of everyday life.
7. Take some quiet time to yourself. When you’re busy freaking out over exam dates, assignment deadlines, work schedules, credit card bills or grocery lists, just stop. Take a deep breath and take a couple minutes to relax, listen to your iPod or to just chillax.
6. Volunteer. It helps you to help others.
It’s a remarkably good feeling that you can only get from doing something for someone else. It’s healthy to have this feeling and the more the better!
5. Drop the bad habits. I can tell you to stop smoking, stop eating junk food or stop biting your nails but that’s not exactly a ton of motivation. When you really think about it though, what are you really accomplishing by doing these things? What could you be doing otherwise?
4. Read. First thing in the morning or right before bed, this can be a great way to relax the brain. If you’re not a regular reader try reading anything. Brochures, the back of DVD cases, cereal boxes or
if you’re reading this column then well, you’re done for the day!
3. Bring out your creative side. For healthy and happy relaxation, allow your brain to simply do nothing.
Now pick up a piece of paper and a pen and just doodle for a good 10 minutes. Relax the mind before getting to your homework but of course, not during lecture classes.
2. Drink water first thing in the morning. It cleanses your palate and just feels really refreshing!
1. Spend a minimum of 30 minutes a day outdoors. Southern Alberta the weather is far from predictable on some days. Just going out and jogging around the block once a day or taking your dog for a walk is a great way to stay in shape without always hitting the gym.
It’s never too late to start a new resolution so be fit and stay healthy!
Before I start to sound too much like an infomercial, just a reminder to check out next week’s column of the Top 10 most awesome things. Sure the category may come across as vague but you’ll under- stand once you read it.
