Christmas is where everyone has their own traditions but there is one that almost everyone shares and that is watching Christmas films. We asked Fink Twedt and Simon Cross, both students at the University of Lethbridge to count down five of their favourite Christmas films to watch over the holiday season. These are all great picks for anyone in the festive spirit looking for something to watch.
Number 5 – How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
This film has become known as one of Jim Carreys most iconic performances. The film is a blend of chaotic humor and heartfelt moments that make it an unforgettable holiday experience. “I love Jim Carrey; this movie is a childhood classic for me and many others. Even today the comedy is good and funny for young and older audiences,” said Cross. This is a great movie if you’re looking to watch a classic Christmas movie that feels nostalgic and wildly imaginative.
Number 4 – The Santa Clause (1994)
If you haven’t seen this movie before, you should. This film stars Tim Allen and follows a dad who accidentally becomes Santa himself. This movie is comedic at best with some lighthearted moments thrown in to pull at your heartstrings. “This is my favourite because it was a silly 90’s movie that I would always watch with my parents growing up,” said Twedt, “It’s just a stupid movie and that’s my favourite part, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and the protagonist is just some guy.”
Number 3 – A Christmas Story (1983)
A Christmas Story is a cult classic that captures the charm of childhood Christmas memories. Its dry humor and the nostalgic story telling make it a good watch for anyone who likes Christmas movies with a side of sarcasm. “This is the most recent Christmas movie I have seen, and I really like it,” said Cross, “It’s a really funny classic Christmas movie, I also have socks with the leg lamp, so it gets bonus points.”
Number 2 – Klaus (2019)
Klaus is a beautifully animated film that was released the most recently on this list. This movie is a 2D animated take on the origins of Santa Claus. “It’s a well animated and heartfelt Christmas movie that has a unique feel and original plot I haven’t seen in any other movie before,” said Twedt. Klaus is a nice departure from typical live-action Christmas movies and is a great example of how the genre can be explored.
Number 1 – The Holiday (2006)
“A romantic movie I watched a few years ago, it just feels realistic and I like that Jack Black is the Love Interest,” said Twedt. This movie is a romantic comedy about two women who swap homes for the holidays and find unexpected connections with their guests. Unlike some of the other movies on this list, its slightly less comedic and slapstick offering a cozy vibe for more relaxed viewing.
That’s all for their top picks. Everyone looking to enjoy some Christmas fun this upcoming holiday should check out some of these films for and eventful and spirited holiday evening.
