55 Kodiak athletes recognized nationally

Story by Francisca Monteiro

A classroom and a track field pulse with the same rhythm of growth and challenge and the same pursuit of victory. The calls of encouragement from your teacher are in step with the strategy of winning your race. Both the classroom and track field echo the sound of effort being pushed: from pencils scratching on paper, feet pounding against the ground to the celebratory roar of the crowd. The student-athletes of the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks have taken these moments and proven that discipline can lead you to triumph.

A total of 55 Lethbridge Polytechnic student-athletes from across the campus have received recognition by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), their dedication to their academics as well as their athletics has brought immense honour to the Kodiaks nation. It’s a journey about self-discovery, resilience and the power of a community that believes and supports its student-athletes. Behind every victory is a network of coaches, family, faculty and peers who champion these student-athletes through every milestone.

Todd Caughlin, the director of Kodiaks Athletics and Recreation, shares that success isn’t just proven through points scored, but also through impressive grades.

“The three pillars, first one being academic accountability… if they can’t pass, they can’t play.” This standard is the reason why many of the student-athletes have been able to push through challenges and dedicate their time into their athletics and their course load. “Honestly, the culture that the Kodiaks bring, or have built, it shows.”

All Kodiak programs had many recipients; however, the cross-country team led the charge with having the most honourees with a total of thirteen students. Ethan Grasmeyer, a standout on the men’s cross-country team, credits his accomplishments to organization and self-awareness.

“A big piece of that is just using my calendar, putting all my classes, assignments and practices in there. Knowing where I am and when I have time to work on assignments. Planning ahead is huge.”

This achievement not only highlights Grasmeyers’ athletic and academic success but also reflects on personal accomplishments.

“Growing up, I didn’t think I’d be a student-athlete at all. So to be here is quite an accomplishment. It’s testament to the hard work I’ve been putting in over the past years.”

This recognition is a result of relentless effort and quiet sacrifices. It focuses on his talent and his drive to excel. The road to success has been shaped by early mornings, late nights and an unwavering confidence in the progress that is being built over time and the patience that comes along with it.

These student-athletes have set a powerful example and proven they are true champions at heart, their story is just beginning and their future looks bright, not only for themselves, but for any aspiring Kodiak. While they continue to break through barriers and set high standards, the Kodiaks community is ready to stand behind them and cheer them on every step of the way.
