Everyone was all smiles at Nicholas Sheran Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Lethbridge Sport Council put on the first ever Sports Day Carnival for citizens, to celebrate the 5th annual RBC Sports Day in Canada.
The carnival featured many activites for the entire family, including free public skating, snowshoeing around the arena, and a traditional needle in a haystack activity. All events were free to the public, and allowed families to be active in the community.
Although severe winter temperatures hit Lethbridge in the previous days, turnout was right on par with what was expected.
“As long as you’re dressed for the weather and you’re out there moving, it’s not that cold out. Hopefully people can realize that the sun is out, and they come on down.” Event organizer Amy Van Buskirk said.
Special treats like hot chocolate, Christmas oranges and granola bars were provided to those who braved the cold temperatures. Several games were also set up to win some prizes.
Other activites around Lethbridge were set up to celebrate Sports Day in Canada as well. Those included a ball hockey tournament and a cricket demonstration.
“When there’s an actual event going on, it gives the kids and the families something, a little bit extra to do. And really it’s a no cost event, so I mean it’s really outstanding by RBC to put something like that on Lethbridge Sport Council as well.” Event Participant Billy Katelnikoff said in regards to the event.
Van Buskirk says she hopes more families continue to be involved in this event in the coming years. For pictures of the days activities, visit the Lethbridge Sport Council’s Facebook Page.
