A Million Dollar Quartet

New West Theatre presents a music-filled blast to the past with tributes to rock and roll legends such as Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley.

The musical production of A Million Dollar Quartet had a full theatre of nearly 500 people on Saturday evening.

The event was attended by people of all ages from Lethbridge and the surrounding areas.

Jocelyn Brayne, wife of Devon Brayne, who played Johnny Cash in the production, says community is the reason we need to keep theatre productions alive.

“Live shows present an experience that you can’t get anywhere else. The energy that you get in a theatre is unattainable in any other format. We create a greater sense of community that transcends demographics, when we see living art together.”

The show opened on Sept. 12 and has seen great success in ticket sales and reviews.

The upbeat production had audience members clapping, laughing and singing along to the 1950’s rock and roll hits.

The cast of only nine members, with one set design was the first show to take place at the Yates Memorial Theatre since its recent renovations.

Gord Graye, an avid New West Theatre attendee says the modern flare in theatre, meeting classic productions are exciting steps in the world of live performance.

“The advancements that they are making to make the lights and the sound better, are what keep things afloat and relevant around here.”

New West theatre is a non-profit arts organization that was founded in April of 1990 by a man named Bryan Parkinson.

The organization made its beginning as a music-comedy revenue and has advanced to the varying theatrical productions that they host now.

Matt Cage, the actor performing as Elvis Presley says it’s vital to localize live theatre and create an inclusive environment in the world of live art.

“Well you know we have to be accessible. Accessibility is what allows people to see and feel the art. When people don’t have the ability to access live theatre, they have no way to experience it and the art form will eventually die out.”

Cage says the production has had a great run so far and knows the rest of the dates will offer unique and exciting experiences.

New West Theatre will continue hosting live productions throughout the 2018-2019 season with performances such as “Titanic the Musical” which opens Oct. 8.

Tickets can be purchased online through the Enmax Centre or at the door, the night of the performance.
