A new dawn of storytelling

With Virtual Reality and 360 video continuing to gain momentum, Lethbridge College is taking steps to showcase the benefits it has.

The college will be hosting a conference called Merging Realities: An event of multiple perspectives on April 26th.

This event will be the first ever Virtual and Augmented Reality conference held entirely in VR.

There will be many different speakers attending this conference. Some will be attending in person, but others will be attending through virtual reality.

One of the speakers attending in person will be creator and owner of Mammoth VR, Matt Wright.

Wright built his Calgary-based company when 360-degree video was virtually non-existent, so he knows the growing pains the industry has faced since its inception.

Wright says having this event will be helpful because so many industry members will be there.

“This event could potentially help grow it because of the amount of industry people that will be involved with this conference.”

Wright also says the growth he has seen since he started Mammoth VR has been huge and he doesn’t see it slowing down any time soon.

“Since the day I started, every couple months there is new technology that makes it easier to start producing 360 which makes it more attainable. People taking in and viewing the content will become more adopted as technology comes easier and more convenient for viewers.”

This event will be held on April 26 in the IB building of Lethbridge College.

The public will also be able to attend face to face at the college  from 4-6p.m. to take in the work created by Digital Communications and Media students along with Multimedia Production students.

Kris Hodgson, Interim Chair, School of Media and Design, says the conference will show not only the public, but people from various industries across Alberta what VR and 360-degree video can provide.

“This event not only showcases students work in virtual reality and 360-degree storytelling, but it also allows various industries to see the type of work going on across the province.”

The public can still purchase tickets to attend the event by visiting lethbridgecollege.ca/mr.
