ACAC’s were a huge success for Lethbridge College

The college has wrapped up a busy and exciting week of basketball.

For the second straight year the college hosted a conference championship tournament.

By all accounts, Lethbridge College and the Kodiaks men’s Basketball team successfully hosted the 2018 ACAC Men’s Basketball Championships.

The college welcomed the top eight teams to the Val Matteotti Gymnasium with two spots in the national tournament on the line.

Manager of Athletics at Lethbridge College, Todd Caughlin, says based on feedback, people were pleased with how the event went.

“Based on reactions from coaches and emails and everything I’ve gotten up to this point I think we did a pretty good job. So I’m pretty proud of the entire team and the support from the college,” said Caughlin.

Putting on an event of this magnitude over such a short period of time takes a lot of work from a lot of people and according to Caughlin, there are some areas that could always be improved.

“Organizationally, you know, there are always the little quirks here and there. But I think on the whole we were able to the little things that happened,” said Caughlin.

Another aspect of hosting a tournament like this is the amount of social media work that comes along with it.

For Jamin Heller, his weekend consisted of posting all scores and updates, and visually capturing the excitement of the activity.

That made him one of the busiest people of the entire tournament.

“From Wednesday, the night of the banquet, to championship Saturday it was pretty much go go go all the time,” said Heller.

Heller also worked closely with the college’s Digital Communications and Media program, which broadcast all games over the internet and generated considerable social media content. Heller says they were a huge help in promoting the tournament.

“In terms of helping promote the Kodiaks brand they were awesome all weekend and all year long with the webcasts they did during the regular season,” said Heller.

Caughlin says the tournament was a huge success for the college and he and his staff will learn from this experience to better host future tournaments.

Caughlin also says the college plans to bid on multiple championships in the coming years including volleyball, soccer and cross country.
