Bohne bounces back in undefeated season

A Kodiak basketball player has gone from being sidelined with an injury to back on the undefeated men’s team.

He was endured both mental and physical challenges getting back on the court.

Trey Bohne missed out on last year when he spent the entire season on the bench due to a dislocated kneecap and partially torn ACL.

Bonhe is in his third year at the college and second year of eligibility as a basketball player and said he was challenged when he first got back into the game.

“It’s hard to come back physically and mentally. Physically, there is a lot of rehab involved. A lot of re-strengthening the muscles you haven’t used in a while. Mentally, you kind of have to get a feel for the game again,” said Bohne.

He said he is excited to be back on the court, even though it has posed challenges. Towards the end of last year, Bohne was able to begin running and participate in practices.

Michael Clemons played with Bohne since his rookie year and has watched his entire recovery.

“To see him go from not playing, to going through the knee injury, to contributing on the undefeated team, it’s pretty special,” said Clemons.

This year is Clemon’s first year as assistant coach for the Kodiaks. He said he was along Bohne’s side, helping him recover with the rest of the team.

“He went from a rookie on a team of 15 guys not playing at all, not dressing, to being out all year. Now he’s playing with his brother on an undefeated team, the number one team in the country. It says a lot about his character,” said Clemons.

Both Bohne and Clemons say the Kodiaks is a unique team to be part of.

“They are so competitive – there is a lot of chemistry, so it makes my job, being new, very easy,” said Clemons.

Bohne said he is grateful to have a strong team that works well together.

“It’s so good to be back, especially with this team. This is a special team… It’s good to get back because I get to play with my brother and with my cousin,” he said.

The team is still undefeated after a 97-83 win over Red Deer College on Jan. 25.
