Brick brilliance: top five Lego builds

In an age where nostalgia and blockbuster franchises are becoming more popular and hands-on creativity has become an increasing hobby, LEGO fans get to experience it with sets that blend iconic pop-culture moments with amazing building experiences. From towering fantasy landmarks to classic gaming throwbacks, here are the top five LEGO sets to build.

#1. The Eye of Sauron

This LEGO interpretation of this fantasy structure from Lord of the Rings is instantly recognizable and has become a centerpiece for collectors. LEGO enthusiast and Lethbridge resident, Raven Merritt shares their experience building this incredible set. “It can be built in chapters, there’s three books and you can build it level by level.”

#2. Millennium Falcon

This Star Wars LEGO set has long been one of Lego’s most iconic builds. Fans are drawn in by the ship’s cinematic legacy and the detailed construction. The Millennium Falcon features interior compartments and a smooth building experience that appeals to both collectors and families. Merritt describes that although they have not built this set, it is on their bucket list, “I’ve always dreamed of getting the Millennium Falcon, but it’s very expensive.” This appeal crosses over generations, with original movie fans to younger audiences that are now discovering the franchise.

#3. Game Boy

Retro technology is officially making a comeback with the Game Boy LEGO set. It is modeled after the classic handheld console, the set captures the retro charm of early gaming with the gray casing, the iconic red buttons, and the cartridge slot. Merrit says, “The Game Boy was cool cause it’s like you’re playing the games and it’s cheap for what it is.” The Game Boy LEGO set combines the feelings of nostalgia and creativity, while being a set that isn’t intimidating to new builders but also appeals to the enthusiasts.

#4. SpongeBob’s Pineapple House

A bright and easily recognizable structure, Spongebob’s Pineapple House is a family-friendly set. The set’s vibrant colours and accurate design make it stand out amongst others and is approachable to young LEGO fans. A fantastic set that allows kids to transition from simpler sets to more detailed ones and has adult fans of the long-running series appreciate the nostalgic charm. Lethbridge resident, Logan Campbell shares his memories with the set. “It was a unique LEGO set that brings back a lot of comfort looking back at it, I remember there was a tiny Spongebob figure that came with the set too.”

#5. Anakin’s Starfighter

Finally, we have Anakin’s Starfighter LEGO set, a slick and compact model that attracts audiences who prefer action behind their builds. The design that goes behind the creation of this set catches young fans attention and collectors are able to appreciate the accuracy and affordability of this set. Campbell shares, “It felt true to the movies and it was around the time that the lego styling kind of changed.”

All these sets are able to tap into different sections of pop culture while giving people the opportunity to create sets that appeal to their character and their interests. From towering landmarks to retro tech, LEGO continues to reflect the diverse interests of audiences worldwide.
