All through Black History Month, Lethbridge Polytechnic hosted events that celebrated culture, history and excellence. From an engaging jeopardy game to a fashion show and a feast of Jamaican cuisine, the campus featured events that honors the past and embraces the future.
The month began with Black History Jeopardy, a game designed to educate and entertain. Students and faculty randomly gathered in the center core where multiple people competed against their colleagues and friends to showcase their knowledge of Black history, culture and influential figures.
Later in the month, the Black Excellence Fashion Show took place in the Cave, highlighting African and Caribbean heritage. Each model presented designs that reflected resilience, creativity and cultural pride. Their outfits represented contemporary Black fashion trends that continue to influence the industry.
Carol Quayson, student representative at Lethbridge Polytechnic says the students get to have some time off from their daily life and enjoy interacting with different cultures.
“Some people actually have issues or problems and through these events people meet others and they’re able to be taken to the right place or direct you to the right resource,” says Quayson.
Following the fashion show, attendees gathered for an evening of Jamaican cuisine. The menu included jerk chicken, rice and beans, chicken curry, fried cabbage and beef patties.
Wilson Matthews, a nursing student at Lethbridge polytechnic and attendee of Black History Month events says he enjoys interacting with every Black culture so far and he is curious to learn more about them.
“Wow, this jerk chicken is insane! I mean I’ve had Jamaican food before, but this is something else. The flavours just explode in your mouth. It’s like grandma’s cooking but you know, Jamaican style. I loved it,” said Matthews. The celebration concluded with a lively party featuring music, dance and social activities, Held in the ‘Cave,’ the event brought students together for an evening of entertainment. A DJ played a mix of Afro beat, reggae, hip-hop and R&B, keeping the energy high through the night. The celebration served as a joyful peak of the month’s events, reinforcing the importance of community and cultural appreciation.
