Cheap is the new chic

Spring 2011 carries a lot of new and old fashion trends. If spring ever comes maybe you will see some of them.

Second-year Fashion Design and Marketing student Brett Drouin says that a lot of nature-inspired things are what’s in right now. Boho chic is around and ever evolving. Lots of technicolour clothing and trench coats accompany these trends.

Drouin says floral print is always in along with high-waisted skirts. These trends also include wedges and lace for the ladies and boater pants and bow ties for the men.

The best part about all these trends are they are not so far out of reach as you may think. You can find most of these items at local secondhand stores. There are many pieces of clothing waiting to be bought and you can easily alter them to fit your style.

Sheers are in for ladies and blazers for men. Oversized men’s button-down shirts are an easy and trendy look for

ladies. Contemporary girls shouldn’t be afraid to check out the men’s section at the local thrift store. You could find a massive shirt with a great print, long enough to be a dress and all you need to do is give it a couple of snips and sews and you’ve got a new-to-you $5 dress.

Always keep an eye out for fabulous belts and scarves while thrift shopping too. Cheap and cute are key.

Don’t be afraid to check out the grandma aisle. You may just find an amazing floral print or the perfect lace top.

Bright colours and blazers are certainly in abundance. Remember, you can always sew something in, remove some tacky badge and cut some tassels off. Except tassels are pretty hip so maybe rethink getting rid of them.

Usually you leave a secondhand store with a big bag of goodies or maybe nothing at all, but don’t be discouraged.

Keep going back, there are always new items coming in. So have fun and remember the words cheap and cute.
