Coalhurst murder case back in court

The case involving a murder of a Lethbridge College student from Coalhurst was adjourned until Jan. 26.

Harpal Singh Dhillon appeared in Lethbridge provincial court Wednesday morning, a day after he was granted bail. A date for a preliminary hearing will be set on Jan. 26.

An agent for Dhillon’s lawyer, Brad Popovic from Calgary, appeared on his behalf to request the adjournment. Also present was a translator. The agent claimed that Dhillon needed translations for legal questions.

Popovic was in Lethbridge on Tuesday morning. After the hearing in Lethbridge Court of Queen’s Bench, Dhillon was released on $10,000 bail.

Dhillon is charged with murder following the Nov. 21 stabbing death of Jiwanjyot Singh Ghia, a 21 year-old second-year civil engineering student.

The accused is also charged with aggravated assault involving injuries to Ghia’s brother.

Ghia was helping his family clean up the Coalhurst Community Centre following the annual Festival of Lights, or Diwali, that they had catered that night.

Three days after the murder, Dhillon surrendered to Calgary police after a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest.

Dhillon was released to the custody of his parents and must live in Calgary while adhering to his release conditions. He must avoid contact with certain individuals, not possess weapons or firearms, refrain from alcohol and drugs, surrender his passport and abide by a curfew every day
