College excited to host national championships

The BMO 2012 CCAA Womens National Basketball Championships will be held Thursday through Saturday, and hosting the event is very important to Lethbridge College

“Southern Alberta loves its basketball and this is an exciting event for Lethbridge College,” says Tracy Edwards, college president.

“Hosting the . . . championship is a great opportunity to unite college communities from across our country. We’ve hosted this event before and it’s a wonderful chance to showcase our educational institution and our beautiful city.”

In 2010, Lethbridge College applied to host the tournament after the Atlantic Conference declined their hosting opportunity. In 2011, Lethbridge College was officially announced as the host for the tournament.  It had previously hosted the women’s tournament in 2006, and the men’s tournament in 1994.

Bill Dean, athletic director for the college, feels the tournament will raise the profile of Lethbridge College in the community, but will also showcase the college on a national level.

Dean also feels that the effect of national attention and a national tournament will trickle down into the Colleges own athletic program.

I believe that athletes and coaches from every program, not just our basketball program, will get to see what it’s like to participate in a national tournament, and aspire to one day make it to that level,” he said.

Edwards also has a personal hope for this tournament.

“I think the best possible outcome of this event would be for our Kodiaks to win the national championship,” she says.
