College open mic night aims to give coffeehouse feel

The event will take place Tuesday evening at Cullen RAC.

Lethbridge College students will be able to entertain their peers on Nov. 23.

Lethbridge College Residence Life will be hosting an open mic night at the Cullen Residence Activity Centre.

The event will start at 6:30 p.m. and is targeted towards campus residents but is open to all Lethbridge College students.

Hailee Walde, a residence assistant and one of the two organizers of the event, says there will be beverages like coffee, tea and hot chocolate. There will be different lighting and music to set a coffeehouse feeling.

“We’re going to have some music, poetry, stand-up comedy. It’s supposed to be a time for people who are like-minded… to have a chance to meet each other on campus and make some new connections,” Walde said.

Students are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible, but sign-ups will be permitted at the event provided there is extra room.A sign-up sheet will be at the entrance, so performers know what order they’ll be entertaining in.

“[The open mic night] is kind of a different event because it’s very interactive with students, it’s not something that [the residence assistants] are just putting on so we really hope students can come out and make it. Hopefully people will appreciate and enjoy that,” Walde said.

Walde also said the residence team would love to have more open mic nights in the future, provided it’s something students would be interested in.

To determine event success, the residence team asks attendees how they feel about the event and if they would be interested in the same event being held again. Sometimes polls are posted on the residence Instagram account, @lc_residence.

The two organizers, Walde and Lucas Selk, will be emceeing the event.

Social distancing is encouraged and masks are required except while eating, drinking, or performing. Performers will be socially distanced from the audience.
