College president, four others named Women of Distinction

Four local women are getting ready for the ultimate ladies’ night. The YWCA will be hosting their yearly Women of Distinction Awards on March 19 to honour females in the community who have been trail blazers, innovators and motivators.

“How many women out there are so amazing and have done amazing things?” says Barbara Pittard, board president of the YWCA. “They’ve just achieved so much professionally or through volunteerism. We find the ones that are the most outstanding in their commitment to the community.”

Tracy Edwards, Lethbridge College president, was one of the winners for her commitment to the community. Besides her work with the college, Edwards is involved in the Downtown Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce and was with the board for Economic Development Lethbridge.
“It is important to be a role model for young women,” says Edwards.

“Women today have many more opportunities than 20 years ago. The only thing that limits them is themselves.”

The other winners were Nadine Chandler in the social advocate category, Mallory Kristjanson in the turning point category and Bonnie Lee in the spirit of women category.

The winners were announced on Feb. 9, placing them among a group of outstanding women from past years.

“If you go back and look at the women who have received awards over the past years, they are an amazing group of women,” she says. “It is great to be included.”
