Column – All dressed up for the new season

Goodbye winter, hello fabulous.

With spring, it’s finally time to put those bulky sweaters back where they belong: neatly folded and placed in your bottom dresser drawer. Although winter attire can be fun (and extra cozy!), spring gives you the chance to look fresh, youthful and sexy.
This year, army patterns are hot. Bright colours are in, just as they always are for this season. A rule to live by when buying spring clothes: no black or grey. Usually most people’s winter wardrobe consists of a lot of grey and black items. It makes sense.
People usually gain weight around the holidays, and black and grey are the best way to hide the winter curves.
Sequins are still in, but on a smaller scale. Clothing with sparkly jewels looks great, but don’t overdo it. This past winter season, we saw an overload of sequins, shimmering fabrics and basically a resurrection of Studio 54 glamour.
A safe bet for spring is the “little spring dress.” Look for colours to compliment your skin tone. It’s not summer yet, so keep that in mind. You’re still pasty, or at least you should be. People know when you use a tanning bed. A fake tan can be very obvious.
Onto men’s fashion. It’s very simple this season: cardigans and corduroy. Have fun with your shoes to break up the outfit and keep it from looking too “blah.” Also, have fun with accessories like bracelets, watches and necklaces. That’s a great way to keep it looking fresh.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, boys, but men’s cosmetics are starting to trickle into North America. I foresee a day where it just as standard for men to wear a nice foundation as it is for women. If you do it right, nobody can tell, and it makes your skin look flawless!
Trust me, men’s cosmetics are something to look into. It’s a real confidence booster to not only know that your clothing choices are at their best, but you’ve also done your best to hide skin blemishes and imperfections.
For both men and women, spring is a great time to splurge on new fragrances. As someone with over 26 different fragrances, I have a few personal favourites. For women, I recommend checking out Gucci “Rush,” and for gentlemen, I suggest sampling Jean Paul Gaultier: “Le Male.” Both will keep you smelling your best, and will make you stand out in a crowd.
Ladies, if you need further help with your spring fashion woes, a fellow Lethbridge College student and dear friend, Megan McNally, of the Business Administration program runs a fabulous blog titled “Small.City-Big.Style.” Here you’ll find plenty of helpful tips and several times a week, the blog is updated with outfit samples, including where each item was purchased. Looking fierce has never been easier!
