Fall means one of two things. One, school is back in and once again we’re hitting the books. It also means the newest seasons of our favourite television shows are on, freeing us from the summer full of re-runs. Shows that are a few seasons in are one thing to look forward to but so are the new shows starting up the first of hopefully many seasons. Some are more appealing than others. This week’s Top 10 is the Top 10 new shows coming to television this fall.
10. The X Factor. Let’s face it, Simon Cowell wasn’t going to disappear from judgemental reality TV shows for long. After their absence on American Idol, Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul are returning to judge a new talent show, The X Factor. In comparison this is just another talent show – except for the colossal sized prize of $5 million. I could definitely use $5 million.
9. H8R. Hating on your most disliked celebrities is now made public on H8R. Celebrities and their biggest everyday “haters” come together on television to speak about their feelings towards one another. In all honesty I do not see this show lasting. However, if you’re a lawyer it’s time to suit-up! Lawsuits coming soon to a television near you.
8. The Secret Circle. Another show with vampires – just what television needs! Not. OK, it’s not about vampires. It’s about witches and a young teenage girl who discovers she is one, and then joins a cult of other witches in her Washington town. This show, like Vampire Diaries is based on a book series by L.J Smith. So if you’re a fan of Vampire Diaries, this show is right up your dark, supernatural alley.
7. New Girl. This is a show about a quiet and shy girl, who, after being dumped by her boyfriend, becomes roommates with three attractive male bachelors. If this sounds awfully familiar to you TV watchers, you’re not alone. In a way, New Girl is a reverse character cast of those currently on The Big Bang Theory. I think I’ll watch this one, but I know in the back of my mind I will just be comparing the two.
6. Hart of Dixie. Turning away from witches and vampires, Hart of Dixie is a medical drama – also a very popular genre of television series. Moving from the big city to a small town in Alabama, Rachel Bilson experiences major culture collision at her new medical practice. I’ve seen the commercial for this one on the CW about 100 times. I wish I could say that was an exaggeration.
5. Charlie’s Angels. Charlie’s Angels has made attempts to regain its popularity since the television series in 1976 with two movies in the early 2000s. I guess this is attempt number four. I didn’t ever watch the original show but I enjoyed the movies that came out, so it’ll be interesting to see how the new show plays out.
4. Ringer. Buffy returns! I mean, Sarah Michelle Geller. Except this time, there is two of her. Or is there? This mysteriously dramatic series had me drawn in from the first commercial. Geller is running from the mob and poses as her twin sister. What she doesn’t know is that her sister has done some things that have gotten her into a deeper hole of trouble. Finally- a television show with a different plot.
3. Last Man Standing. Tim Allen is back on television, this time as the stay-at-home- father of three girls. I wonder if we can expect to see more celebrities making television come-backs. Guess we will need to watch and find out!
2. Suburgatory. Once again we come across the conflict of city vs. suburbs. This is about a girl named Tessa who is sent to live in the suburbs after her dad finds a box of condoms in her room. He believes she needs to be raised in a more wholesome environment. Tessa doesn’t get along with anyone at her school, nor does she appreciate her new neighbourhood. I don’t know about you but this sounds like a chick-flick as a TV series. I have heard it being described as a “Comedic-drama”. Isn’t that an oxymoron?
1. Terra Nova. If there is one show I hear that everyone is excited to see it’s this one. It premiered earlier this week, but I didn’t get a chance to see it. Produced by Steven Spielberg, this show is about a family travelling back into prehistoric times to save the human race. It almost sounds like a television series of Jurassic Park. According to the executive producer, this will be a very action-packed show.
If you are looking for a new source of procrastination, hopefully I helped you out a little by sparking your interest in a new series. Maybe two or three. Check out next week’s column- Top 10 common school issues and how to deal with them.
