Column: “X” Marks the spot for Cowell

Not only is it a new year, but a new decade, and already gossip is aplenty. Whitney has fallen off the wagon and been hit by a truck full of drugs.

Yes, you heard right. Allegedly, she’s back on the nasty-stuff and even rekindling with former bad boy Bobby Brown.

She’s not the only celebrity having a relapse this January so far, Lindsay Lohan has also gone back to her old ways.

Onto news that won’t give you a serious case of the “sads,” Heidi Montag still thinks she can sing. She’s released an entire album to prove this, and It’s, horrendous.

When she sings, children cry and doves die. Her voice isn’t as terrible as it is embarrassing.

Montag also compared her album to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” saying that the quality was just as good. Someone needs to slap this hussy with a white-sequined glove and teach her some respect!

Not that I’ve ever been a huge Michael fan, but I do realize that there is zero comparison to be made. She’s just trying to cash in by comparing herself to him after he moon-walked off to the Neverland in the sky a few months ago.

Onto more water-cooler-talk, if you’re an “American Idol” fan, there was big news this week. Simon Cowell is leaving after this season to produce and judge “X Factor” in the United States.

If you’ve never seen the UK “X Factor” before, you’re not missing much. The similarities between “X Factor” and the “Idol” franchise are minimal.

The biggest name to come from the UK “X Factor” is Leona Lewis. I’m sure you’re all familiar with “Bleeding Love.”

Simon is hoping to replicate that huge success on the other side of the pond in the fall of 2011.

Rumours are already swirling about who will replace Simon on American Idol. The most surprising, was the big old queen himself, Elton John.

Elton has a great deal of experience to back him up, and is a musical genius… but I wouldn’t want to be judged by him.

Anybody remember when he expressed how much he disliked Madonna at an awards ceremony early last decade? If you don’t, to sum up his words, he accused her of lip syncing and made fun of the space between her front two teeth. SNAP!

I can assure you though, that Madonna does not lip-sync.

Speaking of Madonna, hold on to your seats: the exposé documentary “Material Boy” will be hitting theatres this fall. In it, a young man claims to be the child of Madonna, who she gave birth to at age 15.

How this information wouldn’t have reached the media sooner is beyond me, so I’m calling b.s. on this one b.s. standing for Barbra Streisand. Although, given Madonna’s history, maybe this claim isn’t quite that far-fetched.

We’ll have to wait and see what statement her team will release in the next few weeks.

Still on the topic of Madonna, she has her 12 studio album coming out later this year, and will be working with David Guetta.

Look forward to a new sound and a totally new look that will most likely inspire what we’ll be seeing on the runways next year.

As for winter/spring fashion, it’s still all about glam and flashiness.

Sequins are officially back, bright, bold colours are in, and so are chunky accessories. As much as you might like a certain brand, try to find items without logos.

This means no Ed Hardy! If you wear Ed Hardy, the comparisons to Jon Gosselin will be noted, no exceptions.

Look for items that are simple, and mix them with flashy pieces. Simple cardigans look very classy when paired with other “louder” clothing items and accessories. It can be cheap too.

If you frequent any of the malls in Calgary, be sure to check out H&M. They have a great selection at very decent prices, and some of the items look identical to what you might find at Holt Renfrew… although, the quality might not be the same.

We’re students, so nobody’s judging too strongly.

Find a style that you’re comfortable in that makes you feel ferocious. Remember: “Express yourself, don’t repress yourself.”
