Confessions of a 30 year-old Kevin: Don’t impeach Trump

The Trump impeachment hearings are underway and that has more people than ever talking about the prospect of removing America’s 45th president.

If you read this and consider impeachment an important story, I have news. You are out of touch with what working-class and poor people in the U.S. think.

Yes, many people would love to see the look on Trump’s face as he leaves the White House for the last time, having been given the boot.

But for many Americans, problems such as making rent, paying off student debt and finding employment are much more important.

The circus that is American politics and particularly Trump’s potential impeachment are pure entertainment. And if you actually care and feel his removal is important, you are an out of touch elitist who probably owns at least three cats.

Americans are struggling to make ends meet and it shows in the Democratic primary polling, where candidates such as Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Andrew Yang are rising in polls and fundraising numbers.

All three candidates are addressing problems that matter to average people. Warren highlights issues such as cancelling student debt, which is prohibiting millions of Americans from doing things such as buying a house and starting a family. Bernie Sanders is championing free college education and universal healthcare. Andrew Yang has introduced a large chunk of the country to the concept of universal income, or UBI, and offering an alternative economy to the country.

And here you are, sipping your red wine and gleefully fantasizing about the prospect of Trump leaving the White House in shame.

Ask yourself this: will impeachment do anything to help the immediate situation of the millions of Americans who are struggling to get by.

Will a successful impeachment cancel anyone’s $100,000 of student debt or pay the rent for a family on the edge of financial ruin who are about to be evicted?

It’s ridiculous to act as if Trump being removed is important to anything other than your feelings.

His polls look terrible and it’s very unlikely his campaign will be able to secure swing states such as Wisconsin that brought him the presidency in 2016.

What does it matter if he’s kicked out a few months earlier than next November?

The hysteria and anger surrounding the impeachment scenario is almost enough for me to hope he is miraculously re-elected, just for the sheer anger it will provoke.
