Construction leaves residents upset

Months after the colleges newest residence was “supposed to be” completed, construction is still continuing well into this month.

Students moved into the Kodiak house before Sept.14 and construction was supposed to be close to finished with limited disruptions. Some of the residents living in the Kodiak house say that’s not the case.

There have been complaints of construction noise outside, inconsistent room temperatures, and some claim to have seen mice around some parts of the building.

Student Cathy Coppin has stayed in the building but is not currently living there and says the construction needs to be cleaned up.

“There is metal and stuff lying around everywhere, I almost ran over a sharp piece of metal in a parking stall.”

Coppin also claimed the room was stuffy and has limited hot water.

“There isn’t even a heat vent from what we can see and the hot water takes a long while to finally warm up.”

On the other side of the building however, students don’t seem to mind or even notice anymore but are still aware of the changes being made.

Kodiak house resident Jan Welk says there isn’t much else that can be done.

“I haven’t noticed any major problems,” he says, “There was a lot of noise the first couple of weeks, but that’s done now.”

Welk also says that he wasn’t surprised the building wasn’t finished when it was time to move in, and feels like it wasn’t fair to have to pay full rent for what they had to deal with.

“I kind of suspected the building wouldn’t be completely finished by the time we move in but a rent reduction for at least a semester might be appropriate.”

Kim Sullivan, residence life manager says the interior of the complex is complete and all construction will be done by Nov.15.
