Cornerstone funeral home case update

A strange case that emerged in Lethbridge earlier this year was back in court on Monday.

The owners of the Cornerstone Funeral Home, Faith and Ralph Zentner, were not in court this morning. Also absent was their Calgary lawyer, Balfour Der.

The Zentners both face charges of fraud of over $5,000 and offering an indignity to a dead human body or human remains. Lethbridge police charged them on Jan. 25 following an investigation that spanned five years.

The fraud charges stem from what police claim are about 47 different cases that occurred between 1996 and 2006. The funeral home owners denied the accusations in a statement they released following the charges.

The next court date has been set for April 28, when a date for trial might be set. In the meantime, the Zentners won’t see the operation of their funeral home change at all. The Alberta funeral board announced that no action will be taken against the couple until the matter has gone through court.
