Author of “The Speed of Trust” Stephen M. R. Covey was at Lethbridge College on Sept. 23 discussing the ripple effect of trust as a “key foundation to leadership.”
“It’s not a position; it’s how you lead yourself and lead your life. We’re all leaders. Trust founds leadership,” he told the full gym.
Covey is also the CEO and co-founder of CoveyLink, which teaches businesses and people about the effectiveness of trust and the consequences of lacking trust. Mr. Covey is also the son of author Stephen M. Covey, who wrote “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.”
The world renowned speaker discussed relationships and trust in the workplace.
Mr.Covey believes trust affects both the economic and social aspects of the world. There is both a quantitative and qualitative effect to trust.
He described the “3 Big Ideas.” The first being trust is an economic driver, not merely a social value. The second is trust is the number one competency needed for leadership today. Finally, the third idea states that trust is a learnable skill.
“People respond positive to trust, it inspires and brings out the best in people…in a low trust relationship I could be very precise in communication and people can still misinterpret. They’ll project their own agenda into it.”
“My father has an expression: you can’t talk yourself out of a problem you behave yourself into. Behave yourself out of a problem you behave yourself into.”
