Defence proves best offence for Kodiak women

Expectations are high for the women Kodiaks, who will be hosting the CCAA national championships this year, and they came into the weekend expecting a solid performance.

Saturday afternoon saw the ladies pull out a defensive battle over the Briercrest Clippers 46-35.

According to Avery Harrison, women Kodiaks’ head coach, Saturday’s game was not their best offensive effort.

“We were not good offensively. We only went 36 per cent from the foul line and that isn’t good enough.

“We are a good shooting team and normally we don’t have these issues. This was just an off game for us offensively. It’s really just a matter of focusing,” Harrison said of his team’s performance on Saturday.

Harrison was quick to point out, however, that his team did play very well defensively and is generally a tough team to score points on.

With a short bench it is clear that the women Kodiaks are well conditioned and many play most if not all 40 minutes of the game.

Brittany Pekar was the stand-out performer on Saturday, netting 17 points and hitting some clutch three-pointers down the stretch to help her team secure the win.

Friday night’s action saw the women Kodiaks have a much stronger performance offensively defeating Briercrest 62-46.

Strong performances throughout the game by the Kodiaks kept them ahead throughout and they never looked back en route to the win.

Taking home player of the game honours on Friday was Lindsey Pierson. Pierson netted nine points, had six steals and seven assists on the night.

Following the weekend the women Kodiaks sit in second place in the ACAC’s south division, just behind the Mount Royal Cougars, with a record of 7-3.

The women will be back in action Jan.13 when they are on the road against Lakeland College.
