Donated jeans help homeless

The fifth annual Teens for Jeans campaign, run by dosomething.org, is underway at Park Place Mall.

Dosomething.org is a non-profit organization that specializes in finding money for charitable projects, implemented and designed by anyone.

Every year schools and individuals around the world take part in this campaign by donating their lightly used jeans to help a cause.  This year’s cause is helping the homeless population in your community.

In Lethbridge, all of the jeans donated will go to the YWCA and Woods Homes.

Did you know one in every three homeless people is under the age of 18?

Canada’s National Secretariat on Homelessness estimated that about 150,00 people are homeless in Canada. However, other reports have said that number is as many as 300,000.

On Oct. 5, 2010 there were about 207 homeless people counted in Lethbridge. Out of those 207, a total of 20 were youth, and 169 were ‘sheltered’ homeless.

In the last four years Teens for Jeans has collected over 1.5 million pairs of jeans and they are hoping to reach at least two million jeans, if not more, this year.

This year is clothing store Aeropostale’s third year taking part in Teens for Jeans.

Another great incentive to donating jeans, besides helping homeless, is that you will receive 25 per cent off a new pair of jeans at Aeropostale for every pair you bring in.

The school that collects the most jeans will win $5,000 and new Aeropostale jeans for every student.

Jeans of any size and style can be brought to the donation box in the LCSA, from now until Feb. 12. Your jeans will help someone in need.
