Experience of being with new mayor on election night

As I stood among Rajko Dodic’s supporters during election night I realized just how much pressure he was sure to have.

It was easy to see that everyone was extremely happy with his victory, clapping and cheering him on, but there was a part of me that felt almost sorry for him.

He’s going from the ultimate high of winning an election to making decisions that will impact the majority of people living in Lethbridge.

He’s walking into a situation where he will constantly be judged on everything he says and does. That’s a lot of pressure.

And if pressure isn’t enough, he won by just over 200 votes. What that tells me is that he may have won, but a lot of the people he essentially works for, don’t agree with him or support him.

If I knew that my boss didn’t agree with the way I did things, it would be awfully hard for me to be optimistic about my job. There would be a lot of second-guessing and wondering about the choices I’ve made.

Having already served on council for many years, I’m sure he knows what he’s in for, but the honeymoon of winning the election is certain to be a short one.
