Fight to the finish

The Lethbridge Hurricanes gave their fans almost everything but a win in their last home game of the season, with big hits, goals and even a line brawl that included the goalies.

“Really appreciate the fans coming out it was a great atmosphere here tonight, it was very special,” said  ‘Canes’ captain Carter Bancks.
In front of one of the largest crowds of the season, the ‘Canes blew a two-goal lead in the third period with the Tigers dominating most of the time in their zone to win 5-4.
‘Canes’ Graham Hood opened the game scoring his 13th goal of the season with a tipped shot, but the Tigers responded minutes later and the first period ended tied 1-1.
They managed to put the pressure on the Tigers in the second, which lead to two goals, the first one by rookie Phil Tot who squeaked one past Tigers’ netminder, for his third goal of the season.
Before their second goal of the period, the Canes found themselves involved in a line brawl that resulted in 10 fighting majors.
Canes netminder Linden Rowat found himself in his second tilt of his career in what ended up being his final moments on WHL ice against Tigers’ goalie Tyler Bunz.
“It was my last game of the year, I just finished getting sportsmanlike player of the year award, asked Bunzy if he wanted to go and he said yeah, so we had some fun at centre,” said Rowat.
The other Lethbridge players involved in the line brawl were Austin Fyten, Graham Hood, Daniel Johnston and Cason Machcek.
Shortly after the ice was cleared of scattered equipment, ‘Canes’ Jacob Berglund scored a power play marker from a shot that bounced off his foot into the net, putting them up 3-1.
The Tigers tied it up within the first four minutes of the third period and then the lead eight minutes later with Tigers’ Brett Cameron’s second goal of the period.
The ‘Canes’ didn’t give up, as Brody Sutter stole the puck near centre ice to send himself on a breakaway, which he capitalized on to tie the game at 4-4.
The tigers went up 5-4 with less than five minutes to go in the frame.
This game marked the final home game for three over-age Hurricanes – Linden Rowat, Dustin Donaghy and Carter Bancks.
“It was something else I’ve never felt it before.
I’ve been nervous before a big game like playoffs, but this is something that was entirely different, where knowing that this may be my last game in the league,” said Rowat.
“It was more of a numb feeling than anything else. I didn’t know what it was or how to deal with it.
I just kind of put it behind the back of my mind and just play some hockey and have some fun.”
Rowat ends his WHL career with 215 WHL regular season games under his belt with a 92-81-11-14 record which includes 10 shutouts.
“We went back out and saluted the fans to a standing ovation, just a hard fought battle. We won three playoff series. That was the time of my life that playoff run,” said Bancks after the game.
Bancks, who is the 18th captain in Hurricanes history, finished his junior career with, 58 goals and 120 assists and 178 points 262 regular season games.
The Hurricanes lost their last game of the season the following night in Medicine Hat by a score of 4-1.
