For the Lovers and the Skeptics

Do you know your horoscope sign?

Most people do, even if they don’t believe astrology to be true. This can be for many reasons. As an astrologer I find the most common complaint about astrology is, “It’s not accurate.” I used to feel that way – until I started learning more about horoscopes, and how in depth they can be. Let me explain.

There are 12 zodiac signs a person can fall under when born. Each zodiac sign has characteristics that they strongly hold. These are, in order with symbol and a brief description:

Aries (March 21 – April 19) – fiery, pioneering, competitive

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) – earthy, stable, sensual

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) – dual, lively, versatile

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) – protective, traditional, caring

Leo (July 23 – August 22) – dramatic, flamboyant, warm

Virgo (August 23 – September 22) – conscientious, analytical, perfectionist

Libra (September 23 – October 22) – refined, fair, sociable

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) – intense, secretive, ambitious

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) – friendly, expansive, idealistic

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) – cautious, materialistic, hard working

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) – inquisitive, unpredictable, original

Pisces (February 19 to March 20) – responsive, intuitive, fanciful

In astrology the Earth is taken as the center as the universe. This is because it is our location, the center of our universe as humans. There are ten planets “orbiting” the earth (the sun and moon are considered planets in astrology). Surrounding earth is a circle, divided into 12 pieces, each with a zodiac sign in the order above.  When we are born each of the ten planets is in one of the zodiac signs, dependent on your time and location of birth.

What we believe to be our “horoscope sign” is actually just our sun sign, the zodiac sign the sun was in on the day you were born. So when you read your daily sun horoscope in the newspaper and think to yourself, “Whoa, that is completely off. I don’t feel that way at all.” You’re right. This is because a different planet in your chart, likely your moon sign, is reading more strongly on that day.

Each planet represents a different aspect of the human personality. I will go into more depth with each planet in future columns, but for now I will summarize the ten planets with three words each:

*          Sun – birth sign, identity, ego

*          Moon – emotions, memories, personality

*          Mercury – communication, intellect, skills

*          Venus – love, pleasures, the fine arts

*          Mars – energy, challenges, athletics

*          Jupiter – expansion, religion, happiness

*          Saturn – responsibility, maturity, realities

*          Uranus – originality, science, progress

*          Neptune – dreams, illusions, inspirations

*          Pluto – rebirth, renewal, resources
