Without a facility or a structural shelter, the Prairie Dog Canine Rescue is having difficulty finding foster homes for dogs as more dogs are coming in than are being adopted.
President and founder Natalie Kent says the number one thing needed right now is temporary foster homes for the dogs.
“It’s the only way that we are able to save these dogs, if we have homes that are willing to temporarily care for and love them,” she says.
The dogs within the Prairie Dog Canine Rescue stay in foster homes while they wait to find permanent homes to live in. While in foster homes, the dogs are trained obedience and house-hold manners.
“We make sure all the foster homes are provided with food, leash, collar and crate,” she says.
“Fenced backyards aren’t mandatory as people usually know they’ll have to walk the dog which the dogs will love anyways.”
Dogs stay in the foster care until they are adopted which can take a few days to a few months.
Kent says she has had problems in the past with too many dogs and not enough space.
“I had people tying up dogs to my front step at night, or throwing dogs into my back yard at night too.”
If you don’t think you are capable of opening your home to a dog, there are a few other things that can be done to assist the Canine Rescue.
“We are not only looking for foster homes, we also need people that are interested in marketing to help put together ads to put up around town. We also are looking for people to help us put on much-needed fundraisers, dog walkers and all sorts of little jobs that don’t take a lot of time.”
