In a strange case that emerged last week, owners of the Cornerstone Funeral Home are being charged with fraud and indignities to dead human bodies.
Allegations include expensive funeral materials being substituted with cheaper ones.
With the charges involving indignities to a human body, city police say that a finger was cut off a body to remove a ring.
Insp. Colin Catonio said at a press conference last week that there aren’t a lot of details yet.
“We don’t know specific information on the deceased. There were 47 invalid transactions. They were small transactions over a long period of time.”
Ralph Zenter is being charged with four counts of fraud over $5,000 and two counts of indignities to a dead human body or human remains.
His wife, Faith, faces two counts of fraud over $5,000 and an indignity to a dead human body or human remains.
The Zenters have released a statement denying the allegations.
The police investigation dates back five years.
The Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board is holding an emergency meeting to determine whether or not to cancel or restrict the funeral home’s license.
