In the spirit of Halloween, the Galt Museum will be holding its annual cemetery tours this month. The tours, taking place from Oct. 10 through the 25, will be held at the St. Patrick’s Cemetery. The tours educate the community on the untold history of Lethbridge. From mysterious deaths to adulterers, Lethbridge has a surprisingly storied past.
Tour host Belinda Crawson tells an array of untold stories from the past. Marketing/Communications Officer Anine Vonkeman says that while the history of Lethbridge may not exactly be a pretty one, it’s definitely a story that should be told.
“Belinda Crawson focuses on the sort of the interesting and more mysterious stories of the past that tells some of the early history of Lethbridge. She looks at a tar and feathering case, some adultery cases and baby deaths, and some things related to the prohibition era, so it talks about not a pretty past, but that’s okay,” says Vonkeman.
“It’s just a really interesting way of learning about the place where you live and learning about some of the interesting characters that existed in the past and it’s definitely history that you don’t learn in school.”
The tours will be held in the older part of St. Patrick’s Cemetery, so that the tours can be done respectfully and insure that relatives of those that passed away more recently are not disturbed.
All tours will take place at night, so visitors should be sure to bring a coat, a flashlight, and maybe even a friend.
Tickets for the tours are $5 each. For more information, visit the Galt Museum website at www.galtmuseum.ca or call (403)-320-3954.
