I’m sure you’ve heard about some famous “private” sex tapes that were “leaked out” to the general public.  

 Most notably are Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s escapades on a boat. Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton each made one. Vince Neil… let’s just not envision that one.

So when I heard last week that Alyssa Milano had done the dirty deed for a “Funny Or Die” video that went viral, I was tempted to check it out. After all, this is the former squeaky clean star of “Who’s The Boss,” an 80’s family sitcom, and “Charmed.” Upon clicking the link, the video opens with Alyssa and her man stumbling into their hotel room on a vacation in Cabo. The bed is covered in rose petals and the randy lovers are in stages of undress about to film their sexy shenanigans. She places the camera at an ideal bed-viewing vantage point, then “accidentally” kicks it and we are greeted with a white-haired man on the television talking about the conflict in Syria.

Alyssa Milano has been trying to call attention to the plight of people in Syria via her Twitter account and encouraging donations to UNICEF to help children caught in the middle of the war. It is no secret when we live in a first-world country with every privilege bestowed upon us that many people become blind to what is happening in other areas of the world. Why should we care about a country that is half-way around the globe; it doesn’t affect us, right? Until it does….

We have been privileged to grow up and live our lives free from war and sacrifice thanks to our ancestors who gave their lives for our freedom. For one moment, imagine being cut off from the rest of the world, unable to access the internet or phone lines to contact loved ones, because the government wants to keep its citizens in the dark and the rest of the world unaware of the horrors within. Imagine being riddled with bullets by security forces for expressing the wrong point of view. Imagine you and your entire family eradicated by the fumes of toxic chemical gas in a slow painful death. Not such a pretty picture, but it is REALITY for those living in Syria RIGHT NOW. Our leaders are debating whether they should take action on Syria with military strikes. And if they do and the world were to go to war, we would no longer be living within our comfortable reality of what shoes to wear with which dress and where to go get drunk tonight.

I commend Alyssa Milano for her intelligence in knowing and understanding what the people want to see. Yes, she lures you in with her amazingly gorgeous 40-year-old figure and then pulls the bait and switch. Unlike those other “sex tapes” that were leaked to the financial gain of their creators, this one attempts to educate people on a crisis that we should be paying attention to. More people were talking and tweeting about Miley Cyrus’ twerking bum on the VMA’s than the fact that we could be dropping bombs any minute on another country. If Miley had walked out on stage wearing a T-shirt and jeans, without the provocative dancing/tongue lashings, would it have been as memorable? Of course not. It’s all about what gets people talking, and if taking off clothes is the way to do it, then why not also for political cause?
