After another tragedy struck the globe in Haiti just a few weeks ago, the aftermath of devastation and destruction continues to prey on the Haitians, who are left to dig through the rubble of what used to be their homeland.
The pain and sorrow that comes from this nightmare in Haiti is immeasurable, but there’s an inspiring side to the chaos.
When any global community becomes united over an issue, working together in spite of all their differences for the common good of the people, something special happens.
Canadians have always showed their care and compassion, but local MP Rick Casson says that he’s proud of the way Canadians have stepped up to help Haiti in their time of need.
“Canadians are responding and in a big way,” says Casson. “We’ve been able to help in a huge way and one of the reasons for that is the government has re-equipped the military.”
Casson says that Canada has sent military and health care workers, along with drinking water and supplies to Haiti, but agrees that Canada is just one nation of many that need to come together to help the Hatian people.
As students, it can be overwhelming and discouraging to watch news reports and wonder how to get involved in a way that doesn’t cost a fortune.
The Red Cross has made it possible for those wanting to help by making donations via text messaging.
Canadians can text ‘redcross’ to the number 30333 and $5 will be charged to their next phone bill.
It costs less than a pint of beer to make a huge difference and it’s as easy as sending a text message.
