The Lethbridge Hurricanes had a rough weekend with back-to-back losses at home.
The Hurricanes experienced some bad luck in Saturday’s game where they lost 6-3 against the Prince Albert Raiders.
Both teams fought hard in the first period, but neither managed a goal and the period ended scoreless.
The second period brought more action, and early on Raiders Tyler Yaworski and Logan McVeigh scored the first goals of the game. Shortly after, Prince Albert increased their lead with a goal from Mike Winther, bringing the score to 3-0.
The Hurricanes scored twice courtesy of Tyler Kizuik and Nick Buonassisi, but the Raiders increased their lead again with a goal from Josh Morrissey near the end of the second period.
Going in to the third, Raiders were leading 4-2 and added to that early on with goals from Morrissey and Shane Danyluk. The Hurricanes closed the game with a power play goal from Kizuik, bringing the final score to 6-3 for the Raiders.
As part of the Hurricanes’ 25th anniversary celebration, former members of the Lethbridge Sugar Canes, including Lanny McDonald, were recognized in a pre-game ceremony Friday night. The Hurricanes also paid tribute to Lethbridge’s hockey history by wearing special edition jerseys featuring the Sugar Canes logo.
However, the proud atmosphere of heritage night didn’t help the Hurricanes secure a win, and they lost to the Medicine Hat Tigers 8-2.
Tigers Emerson Etem and Curtis Valk scored the first two goals of the night. The Hurricanes answered back with a goal from captain Brody Sutter, but the Tigers soon regained their two-goal lead with another from Valk.
By the end of the first period the score was 3-2 for Medicine Hat, with Hurricane Jay Merkley scoring the final goal of the period.
The second period saw fewer scoring opportunities, with Tiger James Bettauer adding the only goal and bringing their lead up 4-2.
The Tigers scored four more goals in the third period to make the final score 8-2 in their favour. Thanks to a goal each from Boston Leir and Valk, and two from Etem, making him the league’s top scorer with 44 goals in 43 games.
