Hurricanes on four-game tear

The Lethbridge Hurricanes won all three of their games during a three-in-three weekend stretch.

The Hurricanes took their Teddy Bear Toss game Friday night at home against Swift Current as well as their Saturday night game in Medicine Hat 3-1.

They then followed that up with a 5-4 overtime thriller against the Red Deer Rebels on Sunday night.

Taylor Ross, Hurricanes left winger, was the first star of the night on Sunday.

He had three goals and one assist on the night as well as the game-tying goal in the third frame to bring it into overtime.

“I made a good strong play down the wall. I was kind of behind their guys and it was a screened shot, so it just kind of went in.”

Nolan Jones, Hurricanes rookie defenceman, notched the first game-winning goal of his WHL career in the extra frame against the Rebels.

“I just saw an opening, so I thought I’d hop in. The puck ended up on my stick, so I shot it and it went in.”

The demanding weekend was aided by the addition of two new players, Jake Leschyshyn and Nick Henry, who were acquired in a trade last week.

Both players were obtained from the Regina Pats last Thursday for forwards Ty Kolle, Jadon Joseph and seven draft picks.

Leschyshyn, a Vegas Golden Knights prospect (drafted 62nd overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft), and Henry, a Colorado Avalanche prospect (drafted 94th overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft), both slotted onto the first line through the weekend alongside Hurricanes captain Jordy Bellerive.

Both players are acclimatizing nicely to their new team, with each one picking up two points over the three-game weekend.

Brent Kisio, the Hurricanes head coach, said the new players have been a huge boost for the locker-room as well.

“Well, I just think it brought some energy and obviously they came in and played a hard game. The habits are so good in Leschyshyn and Henry and they gave us a lot of extra offensive zone time. All of our guys respond to that.”

With the three wins over the weekend and a 6-0-1 stretch over the last seven games, the Hurricanes now sit just one point behind first place in the Central Division.

Lethbridge kicked off a three-game road trip on Wednesday with a 3-2 overtime win against the Kootenay Ice in Cranbrook, BC.

Over the weekend the Hurricanes will cross the border for a couple of US Division games against the Spokane Chiefs then the Tri-City Americans.

The Hurricanes return to Lethbridge next Wednesday for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Kelowna Rockets at the ENMAX Centre.
