The Lethbridge Hurricanes took to the ice for a great cause this past weekend.
The ‘Canes hosted their second annual “Pink in the Rink” weekend in support of breast cancer.
The event also helped to raise funds for the Lethbridge chapter of the CIBC Run for the Cure in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
After the two weekend games, the special edition pink jerseys that the ‘Canes wore were auctioned off via silent auction with proceeds going towards the Run for the Cure.
“It was very inspiring to play for breast cancer on the weekend,” says veteran defenseman and assistant captain Cason Machacek.
Although the weekend was in support of an important cause, the Hurricanes did nothing to help their record, going winless over the two games.
Friday night saw the Prince Albert Raiders come into town and blow open a hotly contested game in the third period, posting six goals in the frame en route to a 9-3 victory.
“Our effort was not up to standards on Friday night which may have been due to a week lay off from games. We needed to use that time to re energize and come back stronger but we failed to do so which resulted in a horrible loss,” says Machacek.
The Hurricanes played host to the Saskatoon Blades on Saturday night but could not hold on to an early 2-0 first period lead.
The Blades tallied five unanswered goals, eventually leaving Lethbridge with a 5-3 victory.
“Saturday night was a better effort but we just came up short, possibly due to careless penalties,” Machacek says.
The Hurricanes will have a few days off to regroup and focus before entertaining the Red Deer Rebels on Nov. 24 at 7 p.m.
