How many times have you been serenaded by some sappy love song?
Once, twice, five times? (Lucky!), with the selection of lyrics some of these love songs have, I don’t think I’d want to, as most are pretty ridiculous.
Why do certain songs tie marriage and romance as a last resort? The lyrical content in songs now are empty and meaningless, which gives Hollywood another mask to wear in the popularity game.
What happened to genuine, sweet poetry instead of sexist remarks about women’s bodies? How do men seem to fall in love with them specifically for this?
Most songs written by artists such as Ludacris, anything by Lil’ Wayne, Flo Rida, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, are just other examples of 21st century romance at its finest.
The only artist that comes to my mind, who almost always talks about love for their lady in respectful ways in songs is R&B singer, Ne-Yo. His new song “Let Me Love You” is a great example that chivalry is not dead.
In the up-tempo club song, he talks about being there for his significant other even though they’re obviously insecure and scared to trust someone again after a recent heartbreak.
“I can see the pain behind your eyes, it’s been there for quite a while.
I just wanna be the one to remind you what it is to smile.
I would like to show you what true love can really do.
I’m pretty sure he just made a million girls fall in love with him as the lyrics are so moving. And as much as we hate to admit it – because we’re strong and independent women after all – we need more love songs like this in the world.
Behind the façade, it’s really nice to know that women actually mean something to men besides our looks and bodies.
Ne-Yo did not write the song entirely on his own, he had help from other writers such as indie pop singer Sia, along with his other producers.
But still, the heart and sincerity is there in the song and it’s worth a listen (don’t blame me if it’s stuck in your head all day). That’s more than I can say for a lot of other catchy, club hits that tend to spell out the word love in very derogatory ways.
