Today I’m going to take you backstreets back on a nostalgic trip to the ’90s era of boybands.
You could say I left my heart in the ‘90s, securely fastened to the boy band train. It’s tearin’ up my heart to know that the glory days of music are behind us.
So throw your hands up in the air people, it’s time to go back to the good old days.
Twenty-something-year-old me isn’t afraid to say that I’ve got a thing for guys who sing songs about love while gesturing toward their hearts and staring deeply into the camera – you know the move I’m talking about, and I’m betting you just pictured it too.
I wasn’t always this way though: I had a life before boy bands. I mean they weren’t always my number one priority. Well honestly, I can’t be sure of that. I’m sure at one point my mom ranked up there pretty high but, who’s to say.
In my youth it was glorious to see choreographed dance moves, sequined jumpsuits, flawless harmonies and boyish charm every time I turned on Much Music.
There were many boy bands that drove my unending obsession with slick dance moves and multi-part harmonies, but I definitely had my favourites.
New Kids on the Block – The OG’s. They taught me Step by Step how to love music. They made sure I was Hangin’ Tough when things got hard. Most of all, they taught me that inside of me was The Right Stuff.
Backstreet Boys – my soulmates. Thank you Kevin, Howie, Brian, AJ and Nick. All of your time spent keeping us alive made me, The Perfect Fan. You five changed the game. You had it goin’ on for years. You showed me The Meaning of Being Lonely and promised You’d never break my heart.
As blasphemous as it is, I also loved N’sync.
Any good ‘90s girl knows the rivalry was real between BSB and N’sync, but I don’t care. I love them both.
N’sync once said “If you want me girl, let me know.” Well JT, I’m letting you know…time to make a comeback. I understand you have found great success in your solo career and rumour is the Superbowl is letting you back this year but, it’s time for you to say Bye, Bye, Bye and come home to the people that truly love you.
So while we, your loyal boyband fans, await the return of you all to glory, I will leave you with incredibly powerful words from a band that some may say started the boyband craze, New Kids on the block.
“I’ll be loving you forever just as long as you want me to be. I’ll be loving you forever, all this love’s for you and me.”
*Cries softly*
