In a dirty relationship… with soda

Clouded with melting ice, streaks of vibrant syrups mixed with a smooth swirl of cream, the dirty soda sits in its cup like a whimsical storm.

For all those dirty soda lovers out there, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Dirty soda blends are over-the-top drinks you can’t help but photograph before taking a sip. For many the wide variety of different soda flavours and combinations is intriguing. Some favorites include Dr. Pepper with cherry and vanilla. The experience can come as a shock of enjoyment and curiosity. Making dirty sodas are a popular choice for tasting challenges and for adventurous soda collectors who like discovering new flavours. Luckily for those who are fans of the style of drink, there are a few to explore in the surrounding area of Lethbridge. Some of these places include the Soda Mill located beside the Movie Mill, Crumbl in the Marshall’s complex on the far south end of Mayor Magrath, Jerry’s Pop Shop in Raymond, Goose Juice at the Blue Goose Gas Bar in Magrath and Rocky Mountain Pop Shop in Waterton.

Number 1: What to know about The Soda Mill

The Soda Mill offers custom “movie-inspired” drinks, from fruity fizzy blends to creamy soda floats and energizing mixes. Moviegoers are allowed to bring their customized sodas into the theatre, making it a popular stop either before or after a movie.

Due to the success with the Movie Mill location they are also planning on opening a new west-side location in 2026.

Lethbridge has a surprisingly limited selection when it comes to dirty sodas, making them a rare find for adventurous drinkers and soda lovers in the city. What sets the dirty soda apart from the competition in other businesses around Lethbridge?

“Crumbl has their cookies and everything, but when people come to us (The Soda Mill) they’re coming to get a soda, and it’s not like something they want on the side,” Nathan Hillyer, manager at The Soda Mill.

What is something that people misunderstand about dirty soda?

Oftentimes individuals assume dirty soda is an unappetizing or overly sweet concoction when, in reality, it’s simply a playful twist on traditional soft drinks.

“People assume that we’re changing more about the drink than we actually are. The fact that people think that there’s more sugar because you’re adding more to it. So it’s misleading because of what it actually is,” said Charlie Easthope, concession worker at The Soda Mill.

The name can be misleading, there’s nothing “dirty” about it besides the mix-ins that give it a layered, dessert-like flavour.

“Even though you pick the diet option, or even if you get a 32-ounce drink, it’s not saving you that much because of how much we’re adding to it,” said Hillyer.

Overall, the biggest misconception is that dirty sodas are odd, too sweet or extreme, when it’s really a fun flavorful experience to elevate a classic drink.

Number 2:

The Soda Mill emphasizes customizable sodas, from fruity blends to creamy soda floats and energizing mixes. The menu showcases beverages inspired by movies providing a fun, themed experience that pairs well with the Movie Mill theatre.

One recent thing The Soda Mill has been doing is called “soda of the month!”

“In October we did Batman themed ones. So we have the Dark Knight for one of our drinks and for Christmas next month our feature drink is Mrs.Claus,” said Hillyer.

When it comes to dirty sodas, you’re free to mix and match as you please, making each drink completely your own. Instead of being limited to a set menu, you can create a blend of syrups, creams, flavours and sodas that are bold or as simple as you like.

“There’s always this little bit of leftover syrup. And what we’ve done is put a shot of every syrup in a cup and then put it in a Sprite or something. I would say that’s definitely the oddest one I’ve tried,” said Hillyer.

This option is a big part of what makes dirty sodas so appealing. No two drinks are the same, unless you want them to be.

“An odd drink that we serve is our Toothpaste drink. Which is very minty with blue raspberry and Sprite,” said Hillyer.

Although some flavours may seem unusual, you won’t know what you like until you experiment and give them a try.

“Puree, I’ve always thought was interesting because I’ve never tried them before. But the puree passion fruit. I didn’t think that one was going to be good,” said Easthope.

Soda options are endless, giving you the chance to explore new flavours and discover combinations you might never have considered before.

“There’s this one kid that wanted swamp water, which is every pop. But they really wanted to add syrups to it instead. And this one got really wild, but he seemed satisfied when he walked away,” said Hillyer.

Number 3:

Not all dirty sodas are unusual, you simply have to decide which flavours you want to mix and match.

“I always go for it. But some drinks the colours when they blend don’t look the best and look kind of grody. Those drinks I definitely would say throw me off, but they usually honestly are actually pretty good,” said Hillyer.

If you’re looking to dive into the world of dirt sodas, here’s a few recommendations that can make the experience more enjoyable.

“I call it my signature creation. It’s called the groovy baby. If someone’s willing to get Mountain Dew, I always recommend it because we put such a staple on it,” said Hillier.

According to Hillyer, Doctor Pepper is definitely the most popular base. “A lot of people like coconut or raspberry with Doctor Pepper. Same with Coke because those are definitely the ones that sell the most. People seeing the flavours they already know and being able to amplify more onto it,” he said.

A good dirty soda is one that balances flavourful mix-ins for a soda base, creating a smooth, customizable blend that suits your taste.

“I think a great dirty soda really depends on having minimal flavours, like not overloading it, just having two flavours that go well together and make it simple. Like pineapple and cherry. My favourite is Root Beer with butterscotch currently,” said Easthope.

Dirty soda is more than just a sweet drink, it’s a fun customizable experience that lets you explore flavours in a creative and unexpected way. Whether you enjoy a sweet creamy drink or mixing together a variety of soda flavours, each combination can be tailored to your personal taste. For anyone curious or willing to experiment, dirty soda offers enjoyable ways to refresh, indulge and have a little fun with flavour.
