Indecision no more, career conference heading to LC

Students wading towards uncertainty will be given the opportunity for clarity next week.

On Nov. 9, community and students alike will get the chance to prospect future careers and opportunities at Lethbridge College’s Career Conference 2011.

With 120 confirmed exhibitors, ranging from Lethbridge Regional Police to various post-secondary institutions, this career fair is for those planning their next move.

“Colleges are accountable for employment rates,” said Natasha Buis, manager of academic advising and recruitment. “Employers come to this conference looking to hire. It’s a great opportunity for students to shop for employment.”

As one of the largest career fairs in Western Canada, the conference also attracts hundreds of non post-secondary participants. It’s a great opportunity for high school students to discover their potential education and career goals.

“We have high schools from as far as B.C. sending us their students,” said Buis.To impress the employers exhibiting, students are advised to dress professionally, bring resumes and ask a multitude of questions.

“Students need to remember that the exhibitors are sizing them up, as well as their fellow classmates,” explained Buis. “You should treat it like it’s a preliminary job interview.”

The college will be using the smartphone application, called MOX. It works in conjunction with the new portal, https://myhorizon.lethbridge.ca. MOX will be on display with faculty available to help with installation questions.

The app will make the new portal accessible on all smartphones, with easy navigation. The portal changeover took place Nov. 1.

“The majority of people accessing our website use smartphones,” said Buis. “As more people adopt technology, the college must also adapt to stay accessible.”

The career conference takes place from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Val Matteotti Gym. Open to all students, staff and members of the Lethbridge community.
