Internship of a lifetime

For the tenth year in a row, the Troy Reeb scholarship is offered to students at Lethbridge College.

For two weeks, the lucky winning student is brought to the Global Toronto and Ottawa newsrooms. During their time, they’re encouraged to work in and broaden their knowledge of the broadcast industry.

Since the beginning, Senior Vice President of News for Shaw Media, Troy Reeb, has brought a student from the Lethbridge College to central Canada. Reeb, a 1988 LC graduate, has worked in many different parts of the industry during his career.

“There is so much potential here at Lethbridge College,” Reeb says. “Students come from a diverse range of backgrounds. The one thing that they all bring is this curiosity about the world and this great work ethic.”

He says that’s it’s important to bring students from Lethbridge to expand their networks. Although there are communication students in Toronto, Reeb says LC students tend to work harder.

The internship gets tailored to the candidate chosen, and his or her interests in the industry.

“Certainly there are opportunities to learn all kinds of things that you wouldn’t get in a local Lethbridge newsroom,” says Reeb. “It’s everything from helicopter journalism, to working on parliament hill, to covering major criminal trials in downtown Toronto.”

Last year’s winner and graduate, Taylor Oseen, gave a short presentation about her experiences during the internship. She spent a good part of her time networking with as many industry professionals as she could.

“Me getting the internship made me open my eyes and realize that this industry is so big and you are not limited,” Oseen says. “So that’s exactly what I decided to do when I got back was not limit myself.”

Oseen now works as an on-air personality for Country 95 and B-93FM and does some news reporting for CTV Lethbridge.

The winner of the internship will get to see newsrooms much larger than the one at Lethbridge College. To apply students must submit a written story proposal, along with an application form, and a copy of their transcripts.
