Although it’s the season for hitting the slopes, some still hope to hit the greens.
The Lethbridge College Kodiak golf team has all but packed away its clubs for the season.
Last week the team held its first prac- tice since winter break at Evergreen Golf Centre.
“When everyone got back it was -50, so we took last week off,” says head coach Trent Matson.
“Right now we practise every Tuesday night and have yoga one night a week.”
The Be Fit for Life Centre at the college offers a weekly yoga session exclusively for the golf team.
“Stretching, core strength and every- thing that is essential to golf, we’re going to try,” says Matson.
“It should be fun. I’ve never done it before so I’m intrigued.”
The team’s next and final tournament of the season takes place in Idaho, at Louis and Clarke College from March 17-20.
Matson says his expectations for the event are realistic.
“It’s a little tougher because our players haven’t golfed. A lot of the teams coming can play golf all year round,” says Matson. “I’d love to say going in that we’re going to be September-sharp, but we’re going to leave a couple shots out there. The kids have to get a little lucky.”
Matson says despite being limited by the climate, his players are doing the best they can.
“Nobody has been able to chip, putt or play since November.”
Due to a poor finish at the Canadian College Championship, the tournament in Idaho will mark the last of the year for the 2011-12 team.
“If you finish in the top five you get an invite in the RCGA college and university championships.”
“We finished eighth out of 11, so we didn’t qualify,” explains Matson.
“We have four or five events before Christmas, then Louis and RCGA if we’ve had a good year. But last year and this year were two years we didn’t get in.”
Regardless, Matson considers the season a success.
“The kids have been wonderful. They’ve been really enjoyable to be with this year. I wish them well in Idaho. I hope we go down there and play reasonable.”
