Kodiak men fail to overtake Clippers in ACAC standings

When the male Kodiaks entered the Val Matteotti gym on Saturday, they stared at a team with an identical record.

The Kodiaks goal was to escape the bottom of the ACAC’s south division. They seemed confident and looked hungry to maintain winning form.

After a grueling game that saw many ups and downs, the Kodiaks were upset. The outcome was an 85-83 loss to the visiting Briercrest Clippers.

The game was not without its high points. Kodiaks Sean McCormick continued his strong play netting 35 points in the loss.

McCormick has been impressive so far this season, averaging 20.33 points per game and shooting just over 70 per cent from the free throw line.

Friday night’s game against Briercrest had a better outcome with a 89-76 win.

Knowing that it was key to get at least one win this weekend, the Kodiaks came out hungry on Friday night.

The first half was tightly played, but they quickly took control and did not look back.

McCormick had a strong showing Friday night as well, posting 29 points and 20 rebounds.

The men’s Kodiaks sit at the bottom of the ACAC’s south division with a record of 2-8. They’re one win back of Briercrest as a result of Saturday’s loss.

They have a very young and mostly inexperienced team with only two non-rookies. As a result, patience and positivity are crucial.

“I really like where our team is heading,” says Ryan Heggie, head coach of the male Kodiaks.

“We have a hard working group of players and I have been reminding that the amount of experience they are getting as first-year players is something they shouldn’t take for granted.”

The Kodiaks will be back in action on Jan.13 when they are on the road against Lakeland College.
