Kodiak men’s volleyball team ready for second half push

For the Kodiaks men’s volleyball team, shaking off the rust they accumulated over the Christmas break was at the forefront of their minds as they returned to practice.

For the team, one major ingredient on their recipe for success was getting back into game action as soon as the semester started.

The team returned to action in a small tournament in Augustana to try and get the juices flowing again and they looked strong winning all of their games.

The Kodiaks are currently on an eight game winning streak but aren’t wanting to get complacent as they build towards playoffs.

Currently, they are sitting in third place in the Alberta College Athletic Conference.

Third year player Mike Hummel says tweaking the little things can ensure the team hit their peak heading into the playoffs.

“We could focus a little more on our passing to help clean up our sets. The little things like that could help us coming down to the end of the season,” said Hummel.

Hummel also says the team has their eyes set on making it to provincials and that they hope to continue to play hard and work together as a team.

The men played well in their first two weekends back, knocking off Ambrose University and Medicine Hat to kick off their final drive.

Head coach Greg Gibos says his team enjoyed the break but that they were ready to return to action.

“The Christmas break was nice because our boys got a nice refresher with their families. All the guys are healthy and motivated for the rest of the semester,” said Gibos.

Gibos added that one of the main keys for his team’s success in the second half of the season will be their mental toughness which he describes as “key” in great teams separating themselves from the rest of the pack.

The Kodiaks will continue their push up the standings this weekend when they head to Red Deer for a two game set on Friday and Saturday.
