The Kodiaks are throwing in the towel for the holidays.
Women’s basketball coach Avery Harrison is pleased at where the team currently stands.
The women’s team is currently sitting at seven wins and three loses with a total of 14 points in the southern division. This puts them in second place, coming up two points shy of the Mount Royal Cougars.
“I think there is a lot more work to do to be where we want to be in the end, but we’ve shown some really good improvement,” Harrison explains.
Jenelle Gieske is leading the Kodiak scoreboard with a total of 117 points and Brittany Pekar is close behind with 112 points. Both players average around 11 points per game.
Harrison is hoping to have everyone back healthy after the holidays and hopes the team will be able to keep up its excellent defence.
Harrison is also excited to be welcoming a new guard from the U.S.
“She’s an outstanding scorer from southern California,” said Harrison.
The men’s basketball team is currently last in the southern division standings, with two wins and eight losses giving them a total of four points.
However, standings aren’t affecting the team’s performance level. Sean McCormick has been playing exceptionally well and has a total of 183 points, averaging 20.33 per game. Colin Bird has also played impressively, averaging 14.86 points per game with a total of 104 points overall.
The Kodiak’s next basketball game after the holidays is Jan. 13 against the Lakeland College Rustlers.
The men’s volleyball team has also been seeing positive results. Sitting fourth in the southern divisions standings, the team has a record of six wins and four losses.
“I think we’ve played some good volleyball,” expressed head coach Ian Bennett. “I think there was potential for our record to be better, but we had some personnel issues and injuries.”
He credits the team for focusing on their improvements, which ultimately got the team results.
For Bennett, highlights of the season so far have been the players who had significant impacts on the games. “We had injuries but they had to get out there and play and contributed to a win.”
After the holidays he’s expecting good volleyball.
“We’re making big strides to improve and haven’t stopped practising,” says Bennett. “The teams we play after the break, four of them are topped nationally, but we still expect to be successful.”
The women’s volleyball team is also sitting at six wins and four losses, putting them in third in the southern division standings.
Both volleyball teams will be back on the court Jan. 6 and 7 hosting Briercrest.
