A disappointing weekend came to a close for the Kodiak women in Medicine Hat, as they dropped both games of a home-and-home series against the Rattlers.
Friday night, the Kodiaks were able to claw their way back from an early deficit following three pinpoint serves from fourth-year middle, Brittany Noble, tying the set at 22.
However, the comeback would fall just short, as they would drop the opening set, 25-23.
In front of a large contingent of Rattler fans, Medicine Hat opened up the second set the same way they finished the first, building a lead early on and eventually taking the set 25-19.
The third set started out differently for the Kodiaks as they took an early 4-0 lead.
The Kodiaks pushed their lead to 9-4 after back-to-back blocks from first-year middle, Alison Linton.
With momentum on their side, the Kodiaks continued to widen their lead to 13-5 following a massive dig by first-year right side Rayna Tresoor. This subsequently lead to a timeout by the Rattlers.
Slowly but surely, the Rattlers chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the game at 19 before riding their new found momentum to a 25-22 win and a 3-0 match win.
Kodiaks first-year libero Nicole Hawkins continued her fine play this year, picking up dig after dig on her way to another ACAC player of the game award.
“We never give up as a team and we came out on first to start the third set, but I think we just lost a little bit of focus at the end,” said Hawkins.
“We battled really hard, we went point-for-point, and we know Medicine Hat is a really great team; we just couldn’t pull it out,” she added.
The Kodiak men opened up their bout with the Rattlers by narrowly taking the opening set 25-23 after a thunderous kill by fourth-year left side Jeff Marthaller.
The second set would be much of the same news for the Rattlers as they were forced into multiple timeouts as the Kodiaks marched to a 25-21 victory.
The Kodiaks temporarily stumbled in the third set, dropping it 25-19 before winning a see-saw battle in the fourth set 25-20 to take the match 3-1.
Kodiaks first-year middle Tommy Lyon picked up the player of the game honours.
“We worked really hard in the first two sets, kind of let up in the third, but we battled hard in the fourth, the whole time our team intensity was way up,” said Lyon.
The Kodiaks turned their attention to Saturday’s games in Medicine Hat, but it was to no avail as both the Kodiak men and women would drop all six games.
The men’s team sits in seventh spot in the conference with a 9-7 record. As for the women, their 7-9 record is good enough for a ninth-.place tie with NAIT.
The next home games for the Kodiaks will be on Feb. 11-12.
