It was a disappointing Friday night for the Lethbridge College basketball Kodiaks, as both the men’s and women’s teams dropped difficult decisions to the visiting Concordia Thunder.
The Thunder dominated the fourth quarter, finishing the game with a final score of 67-58.
Coach Avery Harrison was not happy with the outcome of the game.
“We didn’t execute our offence, we let Concordia dictate the pace of the game and we sat back and watched them take the game away from us,” Harrison said.
Lindsey Pierson was the Kodiaks player of the game, scoring 20 points. However, she agreed with Harrison’s assessment of the game.
“We just passed the ball around when we should’ve been going to the basket to score. We played pretty lazy,” Pierson said.
Harrison said the team needs to work on its hustle and playing a much more disciplined game.
“We didn’t work hard enough. I wasn’t happy with our effort,” said Harrison.
Pearson feels their defence also needs to be worked on in practice this week and their communication was lacking in the game.
The game between the men’s Kodiaks and the Thunder was a back-and-forth affair throughout the first half.
However, the Thunder continued to roll over the Kodiaks, winning 87-74
The tide turned at the end of the second quarter as Robert Haack of the Thunder sank a buzzer beating three-pointer, putting the Thunder up 33-32.
In the third quarter of the game, the Thunder began taking control. However, Mitch Buffie of the Thunder suffered a leg injury during the quarter and had to be helped off the court by his teammates. He did not return to the game.
Coach Ryan Heggie felt their defence was lacking in the game.
“We chased the ball too much . . . giving them (Concordia) too many wide open looks. They’re too good a team to give wide open shots to,” Heggie said. “We’ve got to stop making the same defensive mistakes. We need a win to make it in the playoffs next week.”
Dario Pasquotti was the player of the game for the Kodiaks. He scored 11 points and led the team in rebounds with eight.
Next week’s game is important for him.
“It’s win or go home,” Pasquotti said.
The Kodiaks play their last games of the season on the road against the Augustana Vikings on Feb. 11. The men need a win for a possible playoff spot.
